You’re The Cure
In 2005, my husband Bill Graham developed a website called You’re The Cure, and the premise of his on-line store was to encourage people to become self-responsible about their health by offering products and health information. I helped him by providing the text on the health info sections. His idea was born out of the desire to balance the constant reiteration of the opposite sentiments: that illness was mostly the result of genetics, and that cure was only found in the brilliance of a healer’s treatment.
For most people, the truth is likely to be found somewhere in the middle, between full self-responsibility and the genetics we were born with as factors in the creation of health or disease; and between the healing potential of our own bodies and the therapies that we utilize in order to heal, as factors that determine cure. While the belief that “you’re the cure” may be empowering for those who love to DIY, for others with serious and long term illnesses, the sentiment of “you’re the cure” may be intimidating, lacking in compassion or just plain not appropriate. In the latter situations, it is clear that a healthcare provider is the best choice to assist in helping achieve optimal health as well as to help relieve suffering, where efforts toward cure (or maintenance of health) is a shared process amongst patient, family and physician.
